Worked like a charm right out of the box at the whatever resolution I wanted. Used this to connect an old XP machine (VGA out) to a new Win 7 machine (DVI out) to a 24" Dell widescreen flat panel. Used to DVI to VGA adapter on the Win 7 machine to connect video, audio, keyboard, and mouse.
I got this switch so I could use the good keyboard and mouse, as well as the 25" monitor, with my laptop as well as with my personal machine. I agree with the user who said not to bother using the audio inputs. This foxed me for a short time. Also, although it's not marked on the switch, it does matter where you plug in your keyboard vs. I got this product because I work from home and have two computers in my office, a work laptop and a personal machine with a large monitor, ergonomic keyboard, and better mouse. your mouse on the switch. Or, you can use it with a wired keyboard that has a built-in USB port, and plug the wireless mouse's receiver into the keyboard, and that also works fine. If it's not working properly, try swapping their positions.
I could have just gotten an extra monitor, keyboard, and mouse for the laptop, but that would have been far more money than I spent on the switch. My Toshiba laptop uses one of the function key alternates available by pressing the "FN" key (FN-F5). One thing laptop users need to know: to get the laptop to use the external monitor, you will need to use some kind of keystroke combination to switch the monitors. Plus, it allowed me to put the laptop up on a Deskstandz stand and free up some much needed desk space. No, the switch does not work with wireless keyboards, and there is nowhere in the manual or on the packaging it says this, and that is a problem. If I really cared about sound from the laptop, I'd just hook up some wireless speakers to my laptop and position them near the shared monitor.
I was recently diagnosed with carpal tunnel in my right hand, and the laptop's puny keyboard and mouse were no longer the most comfortable or wisest option for me. I don't really use sound much on my laptop, and I have a Bose system on my personal machine, so I just let each computer handle its own sound. However, I have a wireless mouse (Logitech MX Revolution) and it DOES work with that. Ergonomically, it's a much better choice. I gave it a downgrade for this lack of information.
This is my second KVM switch, well not really mine I bought it for my friend after he saw mines, Great product.
Pros:- Easy to set up- Can emulate Mac keys on PC keyboard- Solid constructionCons:- Hot keys must be used for switching; there is no separate switch.- You must switch to the 2nd computer before powering it up otherwise it will not be able to read your monitor info.- Windows PC will "bleep" when switched on or off due to it detecting the USB devices coming or going.- Cables are very thick making them hard to dress. It's not perfect, but it would be hard to do better at this price. So, when I needed a 2nd switch for an older system with analog video, I got this GCS632U. This is my 2nd IOGear KVM. A few months earlier, I bought a GCS932U DVI KVM, and it works great.
However, I've switched toa new Apple standard-size aluminum USB keyboard. The catch: The Mac keyboard must be an older, extended keyboard model.
I would like tosee Iogear include a manual switch on the unit to avoid such future incompatibility issues. Then you can hit "control" instead of the Ps/2's "scroll lock."I don't want to chance buying another KVM switch (and spend the dough) so I am nowgoing to have to shut down one computer in order to access the other.
I own a "MiniView Micro USB Plus." I'm assuming the item here on Amazonis the same thing. Formerly, I could readily switch on a PS/2 keyboard using the "scroll lock" key.Or I also could do the mod suggested in the (very good) Iogear manual and make switchingpossible with a Mac keyboard.
It works fine in all respects.
Using the new keyboard, it'snot possible to switch between my MacMini and a Compaq Presario with any key commandsbecause, according to Iogear customer service, there are "issues" with the newaluminum keyboard. The tech did say that a later production run of the same model "Micro USB Plus"(mine was purchased in July '09) does work, i.e., the "issues" have been eliminated (apparently quite recently).
